When Napoleon I entered Warsaw, he had an escort from a group of Polish noblemen. The emperor was impressed with their excellent military bearing and craftsmanship. In 1807, he formed a regiment of the Polish light cavalry whose warriors, besides using the common weapons of cavalry (sabre, pistols, carabine), were armed with long spears. Uhlans had participated in campaigns against Spain and Russia. When Napoleon I was abdicated from the French throne and sent to Elba Island, he was escorted by 120 Lifeguard Polish Uhlans.
