According to the military radio-communications doctrine adopted in 1936, one of the important advantages of the motorised units of the Wehrmacht was to be communication between all units. German industry equipped the army with special communications vehicles, including half-track armoured personnel carriers Sd. Kfz. 251 with radio equipment. They were equipped with various combinations of radio stations, lifting mast, pin and frame antennas. A generator was installed for autonomous operation of the communications equipment. One or two infantry-calibre machine guns were installed as weapons.
