The First World War began on the 28th of July 1914 when Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, leading to Russia to join in Serbia's defence, and Germany to declare war on Russia and France. The British joined the war after Germany invaded Belgium, while the United States also joined the war from 1917. One of the key components of the conflict was the prevalence of trench warfare and infantry battles. Towards the end of the war, the early stages of tanks and aircraft were introduced as technology rapidly progressed. The war ended officially ended on the 11th of November 1918.
