The battle of Appomattox Courthouse, during the American Civil War, was the final effort of General Robert E. Lee's Confederate army of North Virginia before his surrender to General Ulysses S. Grant, commander-in-chief of the Union army. General Sheridan's Union cavalry played a decisive role.
