On the 2nd of August 1990, Kuwait was invaded by Iraq and occupied within two days. Iraq had a large debt to Kuwait following the Iran-Iraq War from 1980 to 1988, and was also in dispute over Kuwait's alleged drilling in Iraq's oil fields. The United States and British began to deploy troops in Saudi Arabia and asked other countries to join a coalition, forming the largest military alliance since World War II. The war against Iraq began with Operation Desert Shield, a military buildup from August 1990 to January 1991, and Operation Desert storm, the aerial bombing of Iraq and liberation of Kuwait from 17th of January 1991 to 28th of February 1991. Although the Vietnam War was infamous for press reporting, the Gulf War marked the first war with live news broadcasts for the public to see.
