This class is important to the Navy, with a total of 57 ships planned for completion. The very first 8,300-tonne destroyer in this new class was DDG-51, the Arleigh Burke, which was commissioned on 4 July 1991. The design of the Arleigh Burke class incorporates shaping to reduce its radar cross-section, and it can effectively counter aircraft, cruise missiles and attack submarines.
