Harris Flies the Tamiya Colours at Goodwood Revival
Tamiya helmet seen in a variety of races as Chris Harris races at the iconic historical race weekend
Last weekend saw the annual Goodwood Revival take place at the Goodwood Circuit in Sussex. Tamiya super fan and friend of The Hobby Company Chris competed in a number of races complete with his now famous Arai Tamiya logo design race helmet.
Chris competed in a number of classic races, but it was one in particular that stood out. Chris teamed up with professional racing driver Marino Franchitti to drive a legendary 1959 Maserati Tipo 61 'Birdcage' owned by Pink Floyd drummer and historic car collector Nick Mason. The historic vehicle is renowned for its intricate spaceframe chassis consisting of roughly 200 small steel tubes. The duo raced the car in the prestigious Sussex Trophy, a crowd-favourite race dedicated to World Championship sportscars that competed between 1955 and 1960. Franchitti and Harris qualified the stunning vehicle in 8th position on the grid with a lap time of 1:26.812.
Beyond the car's rare racing pedigree, Harris caught the paddock's attention by sporting the distinctive custom Tamiya themed Arai helmet. Following the event, Harris shared his excitement remarking that he never thought he would be permitted to sit in a Birdcage, let alone race one, praising the car as an extraordinary, ambitious, and beautiful piece of engineering.
