Stoneman Impresses in F1
Test
Tamiya supported
driver Dean Stoneman gave an impressive display in Abu Dhabi when he tested
with AT&T Williams after the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.
The F2 Champion,
who drove a Tamiya branded car to the title, managed to finish fifth out of
fourteen rooky drivers all eager to impress potential new employers in F1.
Dean enjoyed his
first Formula One experience: “That was
slightly different to what I’m used to! It’s a big step up from a Formula 2
car, particularly the difference in aero. It was good to start off with some
speed-limited aero work as it allowed me to build up to doing quicker laps in
the afternoon. Towards the end of the day, I just kept pushing to see where the
limit of the car is and where I could improve my times around the lap. Today was
a great experience and the team have been really supportive. It’s also been a
major opportunity for me. To be given the chance of driving a Formula One car
doesn’t come around that often, so I feel very privileged.”

Dean’s
performance also impressed Williams Technical Director Patrick Head. “Dean was calm and
unfazed by the step up in speeds and performance over an F2 car, and after the
day his comments to the engineers fitted well with those of our race drivers. I
hope Dean gets the opportunity to progress to GP2 or World Series Renault, as I
think he has strong talent and is clearly a great competitor. We shall be
watching closely."
