Carrera Goes Supersonic
Brooklands,
Weybridge Surrey, Sunday 16th August. Carrera
race tracks have been installed
all over the world in a variety of exciting locations and events, but under the
wings of one of the most famous aircraft in the world is surely a first.
The track on this occasion was the Carrera Dragstrip, a quarter mile run in 1/32 scale on which slot
racing enthusiasts and the general public where able to drive their slot cars
at full speed down the forty metre track, which even included going through the
front wheels of Concorde no less.
The now retired supersonic airliner, which in its time transported
the rich and famous around the world at over 1,000 miles an hour , acted as the
ultimate canopy for some seriously quick times in 1/32 slot. Experienced drag racers were completing the
“1/4 mile” in around 1.2 seconds.
Then later in the day, the Drag Strip was open to the public to drive
their cars down the strip. These times
proved impressive too, with one driver posting a respectable time of 1.52
seconds.
Set at the birthplace of British motor
sport & aviation, the event was part of the Pendle Slot Racing Festival which
attracted over 4,000 people. The Carrera feature proved a massive draw, with a
lively atmosphere as each competitor was cheered on by the enthusiast
spectators.
G-BBDG is now a permanent feature at
the Brooklands Visitor Centre and is one of the original Concorde’s from the
1970’s
